The Passing Of Time
What is it about the passing of time that confuses us so?
Everyone reading this is aware of the clock ticking right now. We know the date (or can be reminded with a glance at the calendar) and we know how many hours are left of this date. We know that tomorrow will be tomorrow's date. We know how long a month is, how long a year is.
And yet, how many times have you heard someone say, I can't believe it is already April! or I can't believe she is already a year old! ?
It might just be a figure of speech, but I'd guess that at some level....we really can't believe it.
Just like arriving at your familiar destination and not remembering a bit of the drive, we go through most of time in a sleep-walking state. We know that we are at work or eating or two days from a milestone birthday. We understand that the clock is ticking.
And yet we don't allow ourselves to fully experience it - to go beyond the fear that this ticking induces within us.
So we sleep-walk and empathize with one another in our confusion. We simply can't believe it.
This weekend, we celebrated our daughter's fifth birthday. I can't believe she is already five.
Tick, tock, tick, tock....
Namaste.
